when i was in high school, i took some extra-curricular class, i'm sure it was civics or some sort of poli-sci sort of class...anyways, i took this class, and we had to participate in a mock trial. i'm not sure why i took this class, as i really dislike any kind of public speaking. i get all tongue tied and shy and tend to trip on my words when i'm nervous.

i don't remember so much what the actual trial was that we had to argue. i know it had to do with a woman and a car...and obviously something illegal (depending on how well i argued). the kicker of this trial is that somehow, the teacher actually got us a court room in the county court house in downtown minneapolis. so here i was, a 15-year old high school student, preparing to argue in a real court of law.

we wore uniforms at my school, so we were told to bring a "power suit" to change into at the court house. my mom had made this green flannel suit for herself. yes, a hand-made hunter green flannel suit. i was a regular melanie griffith from 'working girl'. (and yes, in high school, i wore the same size as my mom.) i brought the unstoppable suit to the courthouse with me, and planned to change in the bathroom.

i thought it was odd that when i walked into the empty bathroom, i saw two urinals. i just assumed that i was in some sort of unisex facility. i (luckily) went into a stall to change, only to hear a huge stampede of men coming into the bathroom. clearly i had chosen the wrong bathroom. imagine a chubby 15-year old girl, changing into her mom's flannel suit, in the men's room, in a busy courtroom, in downtown minneapolis. i was mortified. i had to wait until i heard every single man leave, and then i rushed, sweating, into the court room. i was late...the best i could do was pretend that i was just in another extremely important legal brief that caused me to be late.

the good news, i got the innocent woman off.

(in the criminal justice system, the people are represented by two separate yet equally important groups...)

happy monday!
xoxo,
two birds

  4. Great story! I've never been in court room (which I guess is a good thing) but I'd love to. What a great experience - if you leave out the bathroom mix up!
Love this look. I couldn't join into today - I'm helping out in the print room at work and it's a dirty job - I'm in jeans and an old t-shirt.

  5. Haha good story! I've recently been in a courtroom for 2 rounds of intense potential jury duty selection. In the end I didn't get selected. Phew ... I really didnt want to do it because I saw the bad guys who were in the court room too. But that setting was seriously serious ... I can just imagine how you felt being trapped in the men's washroom there!

Great outfit .. So much like the inspiration photo.

  6. HA! I can't decide which was a better image in my mind...the green suit or the stampede of men....what a great story!

  8. Well hey, at least you got the person off! I had to take a class like that in high school too, it wasn't extracurricular though - I hated it, lol.

I love the print on this dress! It's really fun! This was one of my favorite inspirations as of late, I had fun dressing up for it!

  9. LOL- hilarious!!!! I just died laughing. I bet you wanted to scream in that stall! I couldn't imagine the horror of realizing you were a kid in a men's restroom!

I have a similar story... I was in mock trial, and we competed against other county high schools at the county courthouse (something about some kids stealing another school's mascot- a Bruin). I was so nervous that I ate many little boxes of raisins and then spent a significant amount of time in the (women's *wink*) restroom. I rushed in late with no excuse :-S

  10. This is a fabulous look that you rocked! Love the little socks peeking out of the boots.

When I remember moments like that from child and teenhood I always take a second to be grateful that I'm mature now and things like that don't happen anymore. Well, very much, or, like, a lot... Oh okay, they still happen all the time.

  11. This reminds me of this restaurant I went to in DC that has a unisex bathroom. Even though it was all stalls, it was still weird to be in the same bathroom with guys!

And can you please thrift me a denim vest? I've checked a bunch of different thrift stores and there are NO denim vests in sight :(

  12. LOL Aw poor girl! As a paralegal, I had to do mock trials in paralegal school and I was always so nervous, until the time came for me to get up and show my stuff. Suddenly I was like attorney of the year or something. It was weird. Nonetheless, you look adorable today. I love the denim vest!

  16. Oh no, how mortifying! I had a totally similar difference, except the reason I had gone into the wrong loo was because a MAN had gone into the ladies accidently, and he told me that the other one was the men's as he came out and I was about to go in (I thought it was funny, neither had signs but one had a picture of a hen on it, the other had a picture of a cockrel- hence why I WAS going to choose the right one).
The urinal, likewise, should have told me, but it wasn't until I was in the cubicle, that I realised, when hearing a man pee. I had to sit through 5 successive men doing this until I could dash out. This was in a countryside pub in Oxfordshire. My friend said, "WHERE on earth have you been Kezzie?"
Oh my, it is Megan Olsen- you have this look to a tee!

  21. Oh, how I wish you could share a picture of yourself in the suit. Awesome.:)

  22. Megan, you are a distant sister, I swear. I have found myself in the men's room more than once in my adult life...by accident. I got such a laugh the very last time I was caught in the men's room. Anyway, I am sure you are busy with things going on with Baby Ben and family visits so cheers to you for holding down the fort and doing a darn good job of it. I love your little vest...it is adorable and now I want one. Great print on your dress and why didn't I wear socks as cute as yours? Have a great day! dawn suitcase vignettes xo

  23. aw!!! poor high school you! thats the worst. at least you were in a stall. ugh - what an awful memory though. i hate mock trial, the cool kids were in it and i wasn't because i dont really like debating much - it always seemed to argue for arguings sake since it was all fake anyway.

anyyyhoowww i LOVE this dress! i like your take on this so much - it looks awesome on you

  26. Wow, I cannot believe you had to do that in school, that's pretty intense! I've had the unfortunate experience of using the men's room before, so I know how hard it is to wait it out in the stall in absolute silence.

Love your take on this, that dress is fantastic and I love your blue socks peeking out from the booties!

Say hi to Nora & baby Ben for me, k?

Yes, I didn't participate because my last week was a helluva week and I just didn't have the energy to hustle up any inspiration.

But I still love your blog and your blog hop!
